C is for Chickens 101

Chickens:

I never dreamed I would grow up and be a totally awesome chicken chick, it just happened.  My husband is actually responsible for sharing the love of chicken raising with me.   It is my fault, however, that we have 30 chickens.   I fell in love with them as babies and then fell in love with the different breeds and eggs and I became set on having chickens that were cool, cute, and gave me Easter colored eggs every day of the year.

When I was talking to hubs about this blog challenge he said I should do eggs for E.  I said, no because I am doing chickens for C and since chickens came first for us, eggs are just going to be part of the C.

So let's talk eggs.  Did you know they come in colors beyond white and brown?  You can see in the picture below that my eggs are white, brown, green, and sort of a pinkish beige color.  I have some eggs that come out looking like they are polk-a-dotted.

The egg color is actually determined by the breed of hen and there is absolutely no significance to the shell color and nutrition or taste.  The shell color is simply the shell color.

What about nutrition and taste though?  Are all eggs created equal?  Not by a long shot.   Pasture raised chickens lay a dark yellow/orange yolk that is rich and much more flavor filled than a cage or so called free range chicken.   Pasture raised eggs also should be more nutrition packed than eggs from chickens who aren't running around eating bugs, my flowers and vegetable garden, and quality feed.

When you are looking for the most tasty, rich, and nutritious eggs, you should find a local chicken farmer and see if they are willing to sell their eggs or better yet, build a coop and start your own backyard chicken ranch.  You don't need 30.  Two or three will do most people nicely.

I want to explain a few things about store labels.  There has been a big movement to cage free eggs.  Cage free hens are only slightly less tortured than caged animals.  It is terrible that chickens, who have so much personality and character, are forced to live their life in a cage but the label cage free is really misleading.   What most people believe when they are buying cage free, organic eggs, is actually what they would get by buying pasture raised eggs.

My chickens are outside all day and don't go to bed until the sun sets.  Between dawn and dusk my chickens are running around my yard and sometimes my neighbor's yard.   They roam.  Is it dangerous?  Yes, we do lose some to predators and this has been a hard lesson for me.   I can't stop the chicken hawk or coyote but I also can't stand the thought of making my birds stay in a closed in area, grass or no grass, all day long.

Speaking of grass or no grass, the cage free raised chickens are not required to actually have grass.  It is sad really, what some misinformed Hollywood stars and the media try to pass as the kinder, gentler chicken farming. Cage free chickens may never even get outside.  Free range chickens go outside but they may only be out for an hour a day and they aren't required to have access to grass.   The labels are really misleading and the eggs are super expensive for what you are actually getting.

Understand this, people who raise their own chickens probably aren't doing it to get rich.  I sell very few eggs, give a bunch to family and neighbors who take care of them when we are out of town, and eat the rest.  Feed isn't cheap and although my girls and boys (Yes, I have roosters, 3 to be exact) aren't picky, they do like to have some cracked corn or better yet, fresh corn along with a few treats like cabbage and whatever else I can find on sale at the grocery to keep them out of my garden.

Chickens are very entertaining.  It is amazing how much time I spend out in the backyard just talking to and watching these little balls of goofy.   Did you know that chickens are the closest living relative to dinosaurs?   Watch them walk and it will make sense.

So, in the end, I would say, chickens, while not the smartest animal alive, are incredibly fun, well, except for the cleaning the coop.

What I'm Loving: The Chicken Express

Rex the Roo

Quick hello Wednesday!  I know I have been MIA lately and that's mostly because life has been a lot nuts.

So here is what I'm loving and it's almost all about the chicks.

Chickens:

First is our new Roo Rex.  Chickens are the closest living relative to the T-Rex so when we got our Roo last weekend it seemed only right to call him Rex.  He is the same age as our oldest ladies (which technically makes him a cockerel) and he, so far, had been a good rooster.  We have a friend that wants to maybe give us his Roo too so I think he may be named Tex. Why not? I hope they get along.  Roosters aren't exactly non-territorial and Rex took to our ladies right away.

Our first egg ever!

Speaking of my ladies, they have started laying eggs. At least some of them have. We are getting about 3 a day right now.  That's a good production since only 6 are about the right age to lay and young hens don't lay daily.

Laurel, Logan, and Lesleigh

We got some new chicks too! The three above are White Leghorns.  We call the the triplets and decided to name them after my triplet nieces so meet Laurel, Logan, and Lesleigh.  Don't ask me who is who however because, unlike my nieces, I can't tell these trips apart.

The Triplets with the little babies

We also got 4 other babies who we haven't come up with names for...I am willing to take suggestions if anyone out there has some good chicken names. These are all hens so keeping that in mind, we already have the following:
Frizzy, Star, Snow White, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Katniss, Henrietta, Dumbledoor, Prim, Beltre, Lemon, Winnie, ah...ok that's all I can remember but there are 7 others!  I need to take pictures and write them down!  Lol

So if you are keeping score at home, that is 26 Hens and 1 Roo. For those who are curious, yes when we get a broody hen we are going to let her have chicks.  We even set up an outdoor brooder for when this happens.

I have to give a shout out to my sister in laws dad who not only gave us Rex but the idea for the outdoor brooder.  :)

Now for what else I am loving:

The pope's visit to the US.  He is a humble man and while I am not really on board with all the changes he has made in the Catholic Church, as a Catholic, I understand his reasons and support the changes.  (Although truth here, I still mumble the prayers because I had 42 years of the old-new mass.)

South Park last week for making fun of all the PC craziness.  People are too dang sensitive and frankly, if you follow me, you should know that I am going to speak honestly and gosh darn it, I will wish you a Merry Christmas because I was taught manners and because I freaking love Christmas! If you don't and you are offended by it, that's your problem.

Hubs and me at the Texas Rangers Red Out last week

The Texas Rangers!!!
They are 10 games from clinching the AL West!  I am so happy and excited for baseball and yes, I already have my post season tickets!  I can't wait to share post season baseball with the hubby.

College Football:
I am loving the return of college football even if my Notre Dame Fighting Irish are a little LOT beat up and hurt and even if going into the season, I knew my Texas Longhorns were going to have a growth season.   Nothing is better than college football, except post season baseball!

So that's it.   What are you loving?  Happy Hump Day folks!

Hey, it's okay Tuesday: I'm feeling like a female failure!

Happy Tuesday!   It's time for "Hey, it's okay Tuesday" the hop where I get to share all the things that are OKAY with me even if they aren't "normal".   Here is what's okay with me:

Airing My Dirty Laundry
Be sure to link up with Amber With Airing my Dirty Laundry above
It's Okay:

* Every night I go out and spend some QT with my chickens.   They are very entertaining, believe it or not and my hubs and I just sit out there with them and watch and sometimes one will come up to us and let us 'Chicken Cuddle'.

* I spent several minutes this morning figuring out when we will have fresh eggs from our little ladies.  Have you seen the price of eggs?

* That I laugh that sad sort of laugh when the news, Twitter,  and talk radio start all getting upset that Whataburger won't be selling breakfast at 11pm anymore because of the egg shortage.   Really?  There are people who lost their homes and lives in the flooding in Texas and people are freaking out about not being able to get taquitos until 5am.  It isn't hard to scramble eggs, add some cheese and a slice of bacon or crumbled sausage and boom, you have  your own breakfast taquito.  You can even make them ahead and eat them all week.   There are bigger problems in the world than no Blue Bell ice cream and no Whataburger taquitos.  (Don't worry, I will pin some recipes tomorrow on the blog for those very confused.)
Vanity Fair Cover
* I am super jealous that Caitlyn (Bruce) Jenner looks better in a dress than I do.  Is it wrong for me to think (s)he does sexy female better than me?  Will I get the benefits she got if I take female hormones?  It might be worth a shot!  I am really feeling like a failure on the female side.  I mean, I understand that there is surgery, hormones, and a lot of make-up involved in but gosh she is in her 60's and looks better than I do at 44.  Time to hit the gym and really eat right.  I still won't look sexy but at least I won't feel like a blob.

* I am currently obsessed with Peppermint Essential Oil.  A friend Janetta (who sells for Young Living) sent me a sample months ago for my headaches.  I didn't believe so it sat on my bathroom counter for, well, ever.  I had the worst headache last week and nothing was working.  Not my OTC pain killers and not my prescription medication.   I figured I would try the oil because it sure couldn't hurt.   I swear to you, my headache went away in the time it took me to lay down and take a 45 minute nap.  Since then I have been adding a drop to my water bottle in the morning to ease stomach pain, had my step-kiddo take it when her tummy hurt and I ordered some oils.  My friend sent me a Young Living reference book so I am excited to learn more.
**** A note: don't consume oil unless you know it is quality.  I researched it and most oils are not fit to consume. Also, obviously I am not a medical doctor so this is my experience only.

* I still haven't picked up a paint brush and put it to a piece of furniture in weeks.  It finally stopped raining so maybe I can get a little done Sunday.   I have 4 pieces that need some attention.  Also, sadly, I have a house full of my stuff that could use some sprucing up.

* My hubs, who calls me the social media queen, is on something called Periscope and I have no idea what it is or why I need it.  Has anyone used this?  Is it amazing?  Am I missing out on a life changing part of social media?

*I don't think I have time for more social media.  I really don't have time for the social media I have.

*I started giving my Wednesday blogs 'Friends' type titles and I don't think anyone noticed, or cares. Remember how "Friends' always had titles "The one with...."  That's my Wednesday blog.  Speaking of my Wednesday hop, I am shamelessly begging y'all to join in!

Alright that's what's okay with me today.  I promise since I ranted about Taquitos I will have some recipes pinned on my blog tomorrow so all you Whataburger freaks can make them yourself.  I mean, if you can scramble and egg.  If you can't scramble an egg, I am sorry, there isn't any hope for you in the kitchen.

Shameless Plug/Reminder and cry for Co-Hosts!
A special reminder!  My blog hop "What I'm Loving and Have a Pinteresting Wednesday" will be up at 9pm Central tonight.  Please consider joining me and sharing all the things you are loving and/or pinning this week.   Also, if anyone is interested in co-hosting this hop please send me a message.  I really would love to share and grow this hop.  (I don't have a fancy code because I haven't figured coding out yet.  Just a button.  I know, I suck.)

Blog will post at 9pm Central so you can join the hop
