Daffy, Daisy, and Patty: Welcome to my Duck Dynasty

Do you watch Duck Dynasty?  Did you know last year that I met a lot of the cast members and that you can see  My brush with Uncle Si here?  We are totally going back this year, BTW and I have a goal to meet Phil and Miss Kay.  Anyway, that isn't what this blog is about.   It's about Ducks!

Most people on St. Patrick's day drink green beer.  Me?  I buy ducks.  Okay, I may have had some green beer too but the ducks came first. Seriously, how cute are my little wobbly web footed friends?   So, here is what I know about ducks, pretty much nothing except they will eventually swim and they like cracked corn.

So last Thursday we brought home the little ducklings and promptly installed them in our chicken brooder.  They have no feathers so just like chicks, they must be warm (hence the light in the photo) and they must be inside until they are fully feathered.  (Unless it were like 100 degrees in Texas already, it's close but not yet.)   The argument discussion then began over what to name them.  Finally my husband told me they are Daffy, Daisy, and Patty.  I was fine with the first two but I was really pushing for Paddy and for her to be a boy but I lost.   Why, you ask, not Donald?   Well, we have only one boy and we decided that right now Donald is associated with a more negative person than the little duckling deserved.  That and my neighbor's white duck who met a sad demise a few weeks ago, I called Donald.

Alright, you ask, "What am I going to do with ducks?"   Well, we are going to keep them as pets, first and foremost.   I miss the quacking my neighbor's ducks provided and having lost both in a matter of a few weeks made me sad.  We got 2 girls and a boy because we wanted to take a try at duck eggs.  I hear they are amazing.   Plus, maybe we can breed a few ourselves.

You may also be asking, "Okay so you have more fowl friends, but what kind are they"?   These ducks are Rouen Ducks and they are French.  I don't know if that means my ducks will require special sauces on their food or an Eiffel tower painted home but I do know that when they grow up they will look very much (almost exactly) like Mallards but they will be a little bigger, produce a little less on the egg side, and apparently, they don't really fly.

You are probably asking "Where are you going to keep them and do ducks and chickens get along?"  Well, the plan is for the hubs to build a little home near the chicken coop for the baby ducks and yes, the ducks and the chickens do get along.  In fact, before my neighbor's ducks passed away/disappeared, we often let them in our backyard to eat with our chickens and waddle around for a bit.   The only thing, so far, that I have managed to figure out that is different about the ducks and the chicks is that you do  not give ducks medicated crumble food because it will kill them but with chicks you need to keep them on that for the first several months of their life to fight disease.

The dogs, by the way, are really annoyed that they don't get equal time in the blog.  They look all tore up, don't they?
Ries can hardly sleep!

Sadie is packing her bags!

So I promised them that I would give them some blog space soon.  Sadie hasn't posted a blog in 2 years and Ries hasn't posted one ever so maybe it's Doxie time.

Final question: "What does this mean to you, my dear readers?"  Well, obviously you can expect more duck and chicken posts in the near future.   I have even made a section in my toolbar especially for my feathered friends.   I can't promise you that you will become an eggspert (get it?  Oh I am so funny!) on either but if you have any questions at all about ducks, chickens or dachshunds for that matter, I will be happy to try and answer.

If you love this blog please share it, pin it, stumble it, or tweet.  Just go crazy!

Thank you for reading and as always,
Enjoy the ride!

Things I can not live without.

Confession time:
I started writing this blog on the 17th.  I had all these great ideas for things I couldn't live without.  Alas, I woke up that morning to a sick chicken.   I thought she actually died in my arms, she seemed so sick.  Now, for those of you who do not have experience with chickens, and I am assuming this is  most of you, I have to admit, chickens are what you might consider a little bit of the drama queens of the bird world.   They are easy prey because whenever anything goes wrong with them, they flop down and seem dead.   Problem is, it makes it really hard sometimes to figure out if they are okay, in shock, or dying of some incurable chicken illness.   SIGH!
Patches suffering with Scrambled Egg beak!
Okay, so that is Patches and she has Fowl Pox.  No, not the scrambled eggs on her beak.  That is her poor table manners.  They are, in her case, little black spots all over her comb and waddle (That is the red stuff) and basically it is Chicken Pox for...well, chickens.   After her very dramatic attempted death, I brought her in the house and she acted just about dead for 30 hours.  So much so that Hubs was about to put her out of her misery, so to speak.  I convinced him to go hunting and because I was suffering from some hideous bug that was most likely really a terrible migraine headache that had me pretty much thinking wishing I were dying.  Anyway, I stayed home and by Saturday morning, after I had begun hand feeding and watering the chicken, she made a great turn around.  Now here is the bad news, Fowl Pox is highly contagious and I don't know if I isolated her soon enough.  I have 33 other chickens to worry about.  She has to stay isolated for at least 10 days which means, she is going to be celebrating Christmas with us.  So obviously from the scrambled eggs all over her beak, she has managed to feed and water herself again, thank goodness!  I mean it was like I had a baby with wings to spoon feed.  Seriously. I am too old for this.  So yep, in the middle of baking Christmas cookies I have to stop to burp the chicken.

Okay, without further chicken stories, here are the things I can't don't want to live without.
Kindle Paper White

Kindle:
I was dead set against this.  I liked books.  I liked the smell of books.  I like the feel of paper.  But, something happened.   I got married and couldn't really read in bed without waking up the snore master husband.   Hubs is funny and sweet but he does not like to be awakened.  In fact, he becomes down right grumpy when forced awake.   If he wakes up normally, on his own, he is pretty much Susie Sunshine but if you wake him it is Oscar the Grouch.  I love my reader.  I have previously done most of my reading on my iPad mini and the thing I prefer about the Kindle is the size.  It is just so much easier to hold in one hand.

To go right along with my Kindle is my Amazon Prime account.  First they ship for free.  Next they give me access to movies and music.  Finally, they give me books.  I mean, what isn't great about that.  The kiddo likes to read too, so much so in fact we got her a Kindle Fire for Christmas but that's a secret.   Anyway, it became clear to me early on (read when she stole my full sized iPad and started begging me for books) that I needed to get Kindle Unlimited for the books alone.  So, yes, I am an Amazon junkie.

iPhone/iPad:

Much like the Kindle, I resisted having a cell phone until 2000.  Can you believe that?  I felt like nobody needed to reach me so much that they couldn't reach me at either work or home.  Like anyone gives out their work phone numbers anymore.  Like anyone has home phone numbers anymore.  Anyway, my first iPhone was a refurbished bust.  What that experience taught me was never buy refurbished stuff but I digress.   I moved on to an Android phone and I was happy enough until I got my iPhone 5.   I loved that phone.  It was so good to me.  Then I upgraded to an iPhone 6 and now I am awaiting anxiously the iPhone 7 and all the rumored Apple goodness.   Somewhere in there I got my first iPad then my iPad mini and I officially became an Apple person.

So yes, I love my modern toys.  I don't need them to survive but I don't really want to survive as much without them, now that they have spoiled me.

Sleep time
Okay, seriously, I can't live without my dogs but I am only including them because my chicken got top billing and the dogs get so jealous when they aren't included.  I mean, don't they look jealous?  They are actually alive, I promise, even though in this photo they look like they have been smothered by pillows and blankets.  They like to burrow and prefer sleeping under something, pillows, blankets, my legs, hub's back, our bed, our pillows on our bed.  You name it and they will sleep under it.

Also on the list of things I can't live without but not pictured:

Super hubs.  I can actually live without him for a few days and sometimes I want to live without him for a few days.   Still, when he is gone a few days hunting, I am super glad he is home and I usually do something stupid to spoil him like, make him enchiladas or what he calls Norwegian Tacos. (It's a long story and no they didn't create tacos in Norway, to my knowledge.)  What can I say, I have grown accustom to him constantly talking my ear off.

Some form of transportation, currently my Ram pickup.   Why?  Because I don't own a horse and buggy.

Emergency Wine.   Really, the emergency could be forcing me to watch the nightly news and listen to Donald Trump and his latest hate quest of the moment.  Seriously, who doesn't he hate and who doesn't need wine after listening to him?

Ghirardelli bittersweet chocolate chips.  Okay, I really need to learn to live without these things but I just can't.   Nestle is just not good enough for me anymore.   These things are the bomb.

Things I am living without that I wish I wasn't:

Ah, you speak to me you beautiful mixer you!

I am dying for a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer.   I have been price comparing them and debating on the sky blue (left), cherry red, or the silver (not pictured).  I even found the best price imaginable on them at Sam's.   I still walked away without one.  I want it.  I need it.  I mean, my little, crappy, one blade falls out whenever I try to use it now, 20 year old hand mixer has done it's time and it's time is now up.   Still, I can't force myself to pick one up and put it in my buggy to checkout.
Okay, honestly this need didn't become apparent to me until I started Christmas baking.  I mean, mashed potatoes not withstanding, cookie dough is incredibly stiff at times, especially if you are like me, and forget to get the butter out early to soften.   Anyway, the other day making Chocolate Chip Cookies (I capitalize this because I am so annoyed that I can't come up with a really amazing recipe and yes, I have tried a ton of the "the best chocolate chip cookie ever" pins and none of them really rock my world or my Ghirardelli bittersweet chocolate chips) I realized that the hand mixer was about to just clunk out and therefore I ended up finishing the cookies by hand.   I felt like at any moment my husband was going to come in from milking the cows with two pails of fresh milk, I was going to have to go collect the laundry from the line after hand washing it in a tub, and there was going to be a pig to slaughter for dinner as soon as we got the wood burning fire going in the stove and/or the fire pit.   However, reality struck and I knew it wasn't 1845 so I could just go buy a new mixer...someday.

So long story short, if anyone wants to donate a cherry red Kitchen Aid stand mixer to me, shoot who am I kidding, if you want to donate one, I don't care what color it is, I will make you the perfect chocolate chip cookies, as soon as I find the right recipe.   (How hard can it be?  We know there needs to be butter, eggs, flour, brown and white sugar, vanilla, baking soda, salt and Ghirardelli chocolate chips. It has to be easier than I am making it!)

Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop 179

Linking Up with Katherine's Corner for Thursday Favorite Things

Alright I am sharing my favorite things again with Katherine's Corner!   I love this because

Monday's DIY Blog
I posted about this in Monday's blog but I just love how this table turned out.   I know the picture is a little hard to see so check out Monday's blog for more up close and personal of the details.

This piece I found at the antique store
I love this piece!  It is going to be so amazing when it is finished.  I love the detail the shape and just everything about it.  I have ideas in my head with what to do with it.  I can't wait!!!

This table my hubby brought home for me which matches the end tables I found with the chest.
I love the shape!  I love the legs!  I love that it matches the end tables that I brought home Monday night from the same antique store I found the chest at.   I am so excited.  Originally we thought I would sell it but now, because the end tables are for my house, I am thinking of selling my coffee table and keeping this one.  It is so amazing!!!

Watching my dog play in the snow
Sadie is the only one of the three dogs that isn't afraid to get out there and play.  She loves the snow!  It is so much fun watching her. Unfortunately, with the snow I am stuck at home and having to balance work and entertaining the kiddo.

Okay those are my favorite things for the week.  We are going to the lake for a few days so expect next weeks log to be full of lake pictures!   I need time away from everything so much!!!

Mobile Monday: hello weekend

Friday

I hung out with my friend Liz and went to see her amazing son Jordan in Sweeney Todd. I am not a huge fan of this story but the way they told this particular version was lighter and funny. I actually enjoyed it. Jordan who I have known for 10 years, I think, kind of creeped me out a little at the end. He is a very fine and skilled actor.
Before the play we had dinner at Five Guys. It was my first time. I have to admit, I don't get the hype. Then again, I also don't understand Whataburger, In N Out, and basically any other burger place that anyone has ever gone crazy for. I really used to like Two Rows burgers but I have to say, I have never had a burger that has sent me into food orgasms. Actually, I think only ice cream rates food orgasm level.
Saturday

Rangers Baseball!
I was so happy to be back home. I brought a bunch of water, some pears and a turkey sandwich that I split with my mom. I decided to take more healthy options instead of being left with ballpark choices. The Rangers didn't win but I actually was so happy to be in the Texas heat and survive that I didn't care.
Sunday

There was a wrestling match in my house. Actually, this goes on daily. They crack me up. I woke up with a terrible headache and ended up sleeping half the day. I am going to guess this was somewhat related to being at the ballpark in the heat the day before but I decided that I am going to start pushing through this. I do it during the week. I can do it on the weekends too.
I bought a few books this weekend that I am looking forward to telling you about but none more than this one:

Dog necklace make you beautiful, WILW and OHP

Wednesday!  Don't you LOVE short weeks?  Time to Link up with Jamie for What I'm Loving and
Michelle for Oh How Pinteresting!

I love:

*That my brother totally surprise me last night.  I was expecting him to be very unhappy with a choice I have made and it turns out, my mom gave him advance notice that she supports my choice and he wished me happiness.  It made me so happy, I almost cried.

*The text messages I get almost every morning basically saying "I can't wait to see you and have an amazing day."  I know he is traveling for work but I miss his face.

*Not feeling unsure about a relationship.  Not wondering what he wants because he tells me.  Not feeling like he is pushing me away and pulling me in because he doesn't know what he wants.  Knowing that I am exactly what he wants just as I am.  I have never had any of those things before and to have them now is so amazing.

*That when T called me the other day, he asked how my dogs were out of the blue.  I just love that.

*I love the workout I got in last night.  I like when I can combine muscle and cardio and drip after a workout is done.  That is a sucessful workout in my opininon.

*That I feel like being a girlie-girl again.  I have spent the last 6 months in jeans and t-shirts because I didn't want to feel female.  I wanted to push that aside. I am breaking out the heels and pretty cloths because that is who I am.  A girlie-sporty girl.

*I love coffee.  It is true.

*I love the Cara Box I got last night.  It is totally amazing..and it must wait for another blog for the big reveal but I have to say, I feel so lucky to have met all the amazing women in the Cara Box Exchange!  My new blog friends now reached 4 totally amazing women!  I love amazing women and boy have I been surrounded by them.  Thank you sweet lord.

*I get to see baseball and Toby Mac in concert Sunday.  How awesome is that?

I love my Sadie necklace.  She cracks me up! I definately feel this is me at my most beautiful.

I love that I can see a tiny bit of muscle definition in my really pale legs.  Time to ramp up the workouts!

I love this quote.  Feeling your own beauty is a struggle!

With that in mind...here is some of what I pinned this week:

T told me something similar about what he remembered about me when we met. (Not the I love you part.  Way too soon)

He tells me this too.

My grandma used to sing this to me.

Best advice ever!

Smile until it hurts!

I tried to clean it up.....but OMG this made me laugh...a lot!

This is my problem motto!
