My Weekend Revelation: City Girl Survival Guide of the Woods

There are people who have debated if I really was a female since, well the doctor swore to my mother she was having a boy. I love sports in a way that seems unnatural to some women. I am not afraid to fall and do it regularly when I bike and will again, hopefully soon! I am a funny sort of female. I love handbags and shoes but I don't mind sitting on the dirt and hanging out with nature so when the man in my life said "baby come hunting with me!" I thought, why not? Him, me, nature, and a deer blind!

And maybe a buck or doe and a chance to enjoy nature. I mean...it is beautiful!

The sky and trees and just everything clean and amazing and fresh. How could I turn down spending all that time outside with him? Outside!

So, the thing I forgot about going hunting is that when you hunt, things may actually get shot....and I am a big baby! I cry at cotton commercials for heavens sake! I am the softest of softies. Yes, I have seen the dead animals before...they were dead. They weren't being shot. Watching that was not something I was actually prepared for so I handled it really badly. So keeping that in mind I prepared a sort of City Girl Survival Guide to the Woods

-Knowing how to survive in the city and knowing how to survive in the country are not that different. You can't go walking alone in downtown Dallas and you shouldn't go off running around the woods by yourself if people are shooting guns. Both can be extremely stupid and dangerous.

-It is always better to think first and second and not think 45 minutes later because thinking later could get you dead.

-No matter how cute a coyote is, it is still a dangerous wild animal and not a dog. Don't feed it because it will take your hand too!

-If a vine has fuzzy stuff growing on it, it is better to just not touch it.

-Always be prepared: you never can have enough water, protein bars or TOILET PAPER! (That stuff doesn't grow on trees & remember stay away from the fuzzy vines!)

-Practice saying "yes, dear." Just do it.

-Carry your cell but know that it won't always work. Cell coverage in the woods is a "can you hear me now" experience.

-Always, Always, Always in the event of emergencies know where the nearest town is. You are probably going to need to run out of something as an excuse to find running water and a flush toilet just to stay sane!

-No matter how much you want to, don't drink too much! Those 3am pee breaks in the woods suck when it's cold even if you have a portable potty. COLD! Oh and if it's raining....you are going to be really jealous of your man!

-Watch out for Grapevines, slippery logs, and anything that you can trip over. No kidding! One of my first camping trips with 'the guy, I went out in the woods while he napped and fell on a log and hit my head. Thankfully, I didn't hit it hard enough to pass out because he has no idea where I was and never would have found me. I would have ended up Hog & Raccoon food.

-Never underestimate proper shoes! Just because they work in Ft. Worth does not mean they are perfect for East Texas woods. Things are not the same. The bobcats maybe similar but the abundance of wild hogs and coyotes alone are probably not.

Just remember that you may be an expert at surviving Black Friday sales and your guy may know how to survive the woods. There are benefits to both. He may be able to hunt down a deer or hog but who is he going to turn to when he wants a knew leather sofa and big screen TV to watch the game? You of course because that's your hunting ground! Be proud of who you are and the strengths you have. Personally, I like being a girlie girl when it matters but I am still not afraid to get a little dirty with my man once in awhile. Hopefully, he can survive it! Remember things may die in the woods, make sure it isn't you!

Huge-Major-Life Altering News!!!

I have searched everywhere. I have told myself there was nothing wrong with me because I couldn't make a decision or find "the right one". I have resisted for years on settling for something that just isn't right because everyone was doing it. I finally took a leap of faith and went all in.

Let's start at the beginning. For years I have struggled with figuring out just what I need and finding it. Not too little but exactly what I want. Not too much. I mean, really a woman can get overwhelmed with what to do. There are so many choices and they come in such pretty packages but inside a lot of them just don't have the guts to back up the window dressing, so to speak. So I did what any sane woman would do...I grabbed my iPhone and my iPad and I went to baseball games and I tweeted and hung out with friends until the insecurity passed and something new showed up in my life that just knocked my knickers off.

Finally it happened. It all started in August. I was making some huge changes in my life. I started getting rid of some unwanted baggage and cleaning house to make room for the things that matter most and the people that matter most. Along the way I made the needed additions and the subtractions are taking care of themselves but one question loomed....in crunch time, could I make it work? Could the magic happen? Would we find the something special that had been missing all these years?

Last week I finally decided to ask around and see what other people found that worked for them. When all was said and done I realized...we have a pretty amazing thing going here so I did it! I took the chance & said yes.

Not only did I say yes to this beauty but I finally decided it was time to stop relying on my phone and iPad and yes, Comcast will be out on the 16th to install Wifi. I know...I know! Crazy! I feel so, modern and grown up now.

So today I am thankful of my new laptop and the wifi that is coming soon! :)

Simple isn't....

Simple isn't simple.

I have spent countless hours trying to make my life less cluttered lately and while there are amazing products that help

Like space bags...these things can make 5 pillows and 2 comforters fit in a tiny space...the process itself is not easy. In order to clear out just a part of my linen closet I had to throw away 5 large bags of old linens. This took a good part of my Saturday. What I didn't toss had to be re-washed...goodbye Sunday. That's not really simple...is it?

So I turned to Pinterest to find help on cleaning and tricks to make life better. I found a great way to clean my glass cooktop...with baking soda. Unfortunately it is very messy and I am now a bit obsessed with my cooktop shinning. I may be driving someone crazy with my need to clean the glass...it's just a guess.

Then I checked out ultra organized women of Pinterest and while I feel the need to applaud...I also want a life that doesn't consist of a bin for everything and everything in it's bin. Good Lord, some people need a Container Store intervention!!

This morning I found myself folding laundry at 5:30...am! Who does this? I mean...I normally just you know....leave it in the dryer for a week. Not now. I am folding it like a boss...or an adult. What the heck is simple about that? I realized I need to empty the dishwasher when I get home as I sit here typing this and that is before I pack a box or two and throw out some stuff in a bookshelf and maybe see if my friends who love to read needs any new/old books. I don't feel like packing a closet full of books so what they don't want will end up at the bookstore.

I'm 43 years old and I am learning how to prioritize my life...for the first time ever. That's not easy.

Today I am grateful for:

The little things which are huge things that say "I love you". They mean so much.

Being thankful Plus I found What?

I decided this morning after being completely overwhelmed with my life last night and coming to terms with the loss of at least one and possibly more than one close friendship over something I neither understand nor even care to try and explain that it is time to stop seeing the mess in the closets and see the things to be thankful for so away we go!

I am amazingly grateful for the people who hurt me because without them, I am not sure I would appreciate the one who treats me like a princess. Both have changed my life. Both have made me stronger. Both have made me a better version of me. The odd thing is, the most hurtful relationships in my life haven't come from the men who broke my heart. Not even close. No, it has been the friends who walked out of my life that hurt most and who I learned the hardest lessons from. Not the ones that I just lost touch with...there are those. I mean the ones that I had a falling out with. Those are the ones that I truly learned the most from.

For my house. I am thankful for the messes and the challenges it is providing me because it is making me re-evaluate my life. What I really need vs what I just have. Too much clutter. More than that however, my house has provided me with something that a lot of my single friends don't have. Equity. It has been a struggle at times but when I look back I realize how completely worth the struggle it was. For the last 14 years I have been investing in my future instead of paying for someone else's. The cost of repairs and the stress of home ownership is completely worth it. I am proud of the decision a 28 year old me made. It was the smartest choice of my life.

In the last three months I have learned so much about myself and my relationships by watching other relationships from afar and what I realized is, sometimes things aren't what they seem and sometimes people expect too much of you but the real and lasting friends will stand back and support you and even more they will be happy for you because you are truly happy. I have some really special friends but there have been a couple that truly have been there for me or for someone I love in ways I can't ever express thanks for...so to Trish and Sandy...thank you both for being there to help. You listened and laughed and just were there when nobody else was. So much love to you both.

Alright that gets me through days 1-3....I may not make it 30 but I will try.

Alright so I thought I would share a few things I found while cleaning out one closet:

Michael Young...I couldn't find his feet at first but eventually...

I reunited him with the shoes!

Some newspapers and magazines from days gone by. The 2010 ALCS that sent the Rangers to their first World Series brought a smile.

The Sept. 2001 stuff brought sadness.

I am serious...I didn't know I had either the light or the funny Halloween headband however...

I knew immediately my awesome neighbor Sharon needed that headband!

Okay...have to go...I still have 3 closets to tackle at some point and a lot of laundry! So thankful for a washer and dryer! :-)

Laura
